A new way to look at the breed standard!

Early sportsmen and women who wrote the first Welsh springer standards understood the value of a hardy flushing dog -- a dog that could hunt all day long in the toughest conditions, yet remain merry and good natured.

Now there is a video to help bring the words of the standard to life! Even if you have never hunted or shown a Welsh springer, you'll come away with a better appreciation of how the breed's unique proportions, structure, and type work in the field and in the ring.

The Working Welshman was written and produced by long-time breeders of dual-purpose Welsh springers and was professionally filmed and edited. Each person involved with the making of this video donated his or her expertise, time, and effort for the love of working dogs.

Dogwood Welsh Springer Spaniel Club offers The Working Welshman as a service to the breed. Your payment goes toward offsetting some of the professional production costs involved in making the film.

We get Questions.  We have Answers!

  • Is the video about hunting? No. The video is an in-depth discussion of the breed standard for Welsh springer spaniels. The standard was written to describe a working dog.  The video shows why each element of the standard is important.
  • Where was the video shot?  All the field footage was shot in Michigan.
  • Why Michigan?  That's where the videographer and one of the producers live. Also the available property had the right kind of cover and terrain.
  • Who are the dogs in the video?  Ch. Don's Still Waters Run Deep, J.H., W.D.X., C.G.C.; Ch. Merry One's I'm A Statesman, W.D.X.; Ch. Ky-Bryn Krush On You, W.D., C.G.C.; Ch. Ky-Bryn Awaitin' Wings, W.D., C.G.C.; Benton Essence O'Wales, W.D.
  • Do these dogs actually hunt?  Yes.  These dogs are all working gun dogs as well as successful show dogs.  In fact in one scene you will see one of the dogs competing in the group ring at a show and then using the same movement and structure in the field.
